The holiday season can, understandably, be distracting and lead to a loss of productivity. For many employees, it’s due to their busy schedules and the demands of holiday tasks. In addition, the season is one of the biggest vacation times of the year, leading to limited supervision and oversight. It’s no wonder that people struggle to stay motivated.

Leave Personal Responsibilities at Home

Personal errands are one of the most common workplace distractions during the holiday season. It’s impossible to completely focus on multiple tasks at the same time. To keep your work output high, you have to separate the two. Instead of planning holiday events during work hours, consider taking a day or two off from work to prepare for the festivities thoroughly. Tackle your to-do lists and return to work clearheaded.

Avoid Multitasking!

Although it’s possible to work on several projects at the same time, it’s not always the best idea. Consider which projects need to be prioritized. Doing so will allow you to complete the tasks and avoid getting carried away.

Organize Tasks

To help keep track of all of your to-do lists, start by drawing two columns and writing down the various tasks you have to accomplish. Having a comprehensive list will help put your mind at ease and make it easier to keep track of all of your tasks.

Limit Distractions

You’ve probably been daydreaming about a holiday party or figuring out how to get to your son’s winter concert on time. The holidays can be a time of stress and excitement, and it can be hard to keep focused on your work. One of the easiest ways to avoid getting distracted at work is to limit your activities.

If you’re constantly checking your email, it’s time to limit how much time you spend responding to it. Set aside a specific time to open and check your inbox each day. If you’re worried you might miss an important client or manager, try setting up desktop alerts for them.

Ask Family to Respect Working Hours

One of the most important steps that you can take to keep focused on your work is to avoid using your phone, email, and text messaging. Although most of your professional friends understand this, family members can be more difficult to see the boundaries. During the holidays, the number of texts and calls can increase significantly.

You should place your phone in a desk drawer until after work and ask your loved ones to refrain from calling or texting you while you’re at work. Explain to them that it can hurt your professional image, send the wrong message, and distract you from your tasks. Of course, this doesn’t mean you don’t love them, but setting boundaries is important to ensure you’re working efficiently.

Avoid using social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter during office hours. If you’re still using social media as part of your job, set aside time each day to update your feeds and respond to comments then move on.

This is a wonderful time of year! Make the most of it by acknowledging that you have a lot on your plate and planning accordingly. Avoid overcommitting to holiday activities or work projects. It can be tempting to say yes to everything but remember it’s not worth your sanity.
